Synopsis

A couple reflects on their relationship as they wander through a small fishing village, while locals go about their daily routines. Produced the same year Truffaut published his landmark critique of French cinema’s over-reliance on literary adaptations, Varda boldly and defiantly draws inspiration from William Faulkner’s novel “The Wild Palms” for her debut feature. The director “cine-writes” a dual narrative that blends fiction with documentary, establishing, even at a young age, some of the distinctive characteristics that would define her unmistakable auteur style.
