Synopsis
The opening title reads: “The Opera-Mouffe: A notebook of filmed observations from Rue Mouffetard in Paris by a pregnant woman in 1958.” What follows is musical – a simple opera of everyday life – that soon reveals more than just images of the street and life in France. Pregnant with her first daughter, Rosalie, and guided by the curiosity and freedom that would define her style over the years, Varda employs various filming techniques and staging methods to “write” and share the love, anguish, and sensations of pregnancy. Agnès Varda
Born in Belgium and based in France, Agnès Varda (1928–2019) created a body of work that spanned decades, artistic movements, and mediums. A filmmaker committed to the constant reinvention of her craft, she directed over 50 films and worked extensively in photography and visual arts. The creator of the concept of cinécriture (film-writing) and a central figure in the Nouvelle Vague, she is widely regarded as a landmark voice in modern cinema, women’s filmmaking, and the essay film form. Her career was celebrated with numerous prestigious awards, including becoming the first woman to receive both an honorary Oscar and an honorary Palme d’Or.
